Ship’s Company Theatre 2011 Season


The (Post) Mistress, Book, Lyrics, and Music by Tomson Highway, makes its Atlantic Canada Premiere. The second Mainstage production runs August 3rd through August 28th. Directed by Andrew Lamb, the show stars Martha Irving with Musical Direction from pianist Holly Arsenault and saxophone by Mitchell Clarke.

A charming new musical by one of Canada’s most original writers, The (Post) Mistress recounts the journey of a small-town postmistress who has an uncanny ability to guess the contents of sealed letters that pass through her hands.  Marie-Louise has worked at the same post office for many years, and knows the tales, gossip, and emotional life of her community.  Through the letters (songs) she lays bare the intimate secrets of people’s lives.

Sunnyside Café by Pam Calabrese MacLean will be the Fall Mainstage show running from September 6th through September 11th.  A Forerunners Playwrights’ Theatre Production, directed by Lee J. Campbell starring Sherry Smith.

A haunting, tender, and beautiful production, this gem recounts the life, difficulties, and joys of a small-town waitress.

Lorne Elliott, one of Canada’s most dynamic entertainers, is back to captain the Second Stage this summer with Three Evenings of Music and Comedy on July 27th, 28th, and 29th.  Well known for his long running CBC Radio comedy series, Lorne continues to keep people laughing from coast to coast, engaging his audiences and captivating all with his humour and wit.

The Monday Night Concert Series will offer an array of extremely talented Atlantic performers this summer. There will be something for everyone as various genres are celebrated from Country to Jazz, Bluegrass to Rock, and beyond! Dynamic audience favourite Hal Bruce is back on July 11th with “Hal Bruce and the Best of The 1960s” to start the series. Next, Nova Scotia musicians Jason and Jamie Spinney showcase their edgy new Southern country rock band Witchitaw on July 18th. A real treat is in store, Rik Reese will be performing this year with New Brunswick band Neon Highway, nicknamed the “KISS” of country rock, coming to the stage on July 25th with their country rock flare while on August 8th Gordie MacKeeman and his Rhythm Boys promises to offer a rompin’, stompin’, toe-tappin’ good time to all. The amazing, sensuous jazz sounds of Erin Costelo, one of Nova Scotia’s most searing emerging talents will be presented on August 15th while the following week on August 22nd, one of Canada’s most gifted singer/songwriters, Rose Cousins will showcase her style and talent on the Ship’s Company stage. The final concert in the series on August 29th will feature the original blues sounds of The Hupman Brothers, one of Nova Scotia’s most popular contemporary touring bands.

Back by popular demand for the Fall Mainstage Special Event is a musical Patsy Cline tribute show, re-imagined and reworked by Associate Artist Greg Simm. Patsy Cline – She’s Got You! will take place on September 30th, October 1st and 2nd.

Drama Day Camps for young people in three age groups will take place during the month of August and a Kid’s Stage performance, The Maritime Marionettes production of Jack and the Beanstalk, will take place on September 17th.
