‘Sunnyside Cafe’ has its Ship’s Company Theatre Premiere
by Rose Willigar, Ship's Company TheatrePARRSBORO – Pam Calabrese MacLean’s sensational production Sunnyside Cafe premieres at Ship’s Company Theatre in Parrsboro on September 7.
Sunnyside Café, a Forerunners Playwrights’ Theatre production, waswritten by Pam Calabrese MacLean. The production is directed by Lee J. Campbell and stars Merritt-award winning actress Sherry Smith.
Sunnyside Cafe is the second play the playwright wrote and received rave reviews at last year’s Atlantic Fringe Festival and was one of Kate Watson’s ( The Coast), Top Fringe Picks back in 2009.
This production is a beautiful and tender one-woman show that recounts the life, difficulties and joys of a small town waitress. It tells the story of a woman named Eva who spends her life waiting. She waits on people at the Sunnyside Café, she waits for change to happen upon her life and she waits for the return of Peg.
“Among many things the production is about; decisions and events from ones youth that can – and do – effect their whole life. ‘Sunnyside Café’ shows the results,” the playwright said.
Director, Lee J. Campbell says the first thing he looks for in a play is heart.
“Sunnyside Café is a very funny play with a mystery at its core. I wouldn’t love it as I do had my heart not been captured by Eva, the wonderful small-town waitress with her wit, humour and courage. She is a gem. And for that we must thank our other two women with great hearts – Pam who gave Eva words and Sherry who gave Eva voice,” Director Lee J. Campbell said.
