PARRSBORO – Tomson Highway’s sensational new musical The (Post) Mistress receives its Atlantic Premiere at Ship’s Company Theatre in Parrsboro on August 3.

The (Post) Mistress, book, music and lyrics by Tomson Highway, is a charming new musical recounting the journey of a small town postmistress who uncannily guesses the private contents of peoples’ letters. Marie-Louise (portrayed by Martha Irving) has worked at the same post office for many years and knows the tales, gossips and emotional life of her community. Through the letters (songs) she lays bare the intimate secrets of peoples’ lives.

Rehearsals are underway, for this teasingly lighthearted musical Directed by Andrew Lamb with Musical Direction by Holly Arsenault and saxophone by Mitchell Clarke.

The (Post) Mistress takes place in the fictitious town of Lovely, in a time when people still sent handwritten letters by post. It features twelve charming, funny, tenderhearted songs, and is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

Composer/writer Tomson Highway says this musical was inspired by his friendship with a real post mistress, combined with music he collected by having toured a cabaret with these songs internationally for years.

“It’s a real joy to bring The (Post) Mistress to our wonderful audiences.  Starring the incomparable Martha Irving, with catchy, funny and heartwarming music in a variety of styles, the piece is perfect for groups, families, couples – or for just those who want to get away for an enchanting evening”, the theatre’s Artistic Producer, Matthew Tiffin, said.

Ship’s Company Theatre invites you to step aboard the M.V. Kipawo for this marvellous 2011 production of The (Post) Mistress with preview nights on August 3rd and 4th, with Gala Opening on August 5th. The (Post) Mistress runs until August 28th.
