Poignant Story of Remembrance Comes to Ship’s Company Theatre in Parrsboro

by Rena Kossatz, Ship's Company Theatre

PARRSBORO, NS: Ship’s Company Theatre in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia, is pleased to present Jake’s Gift, a story of remembrance, on Friday, September 10th at 8pm, Saturday, September 11th at 2pm and Sunday, September 12th at 2pm.

Jake’s Gift  is a poignant story about Jake, an 80-year-old veteran returning to the beaches of Normandy on the 60th anniversary of the D-Day invasion. While there, Jake encounters a precocious young French girl whose inquisitive nature and charm challenge the old soldier to confront some long-ignored ghosts. The story is of one soldier, yet it bristles with an emotional authenticity that speaks simply and directly to the universal heart of loss.

Playwright Julia Mackey says, “Jake’s Gift  is a love letter to all veterans and is my way of saying thank you to a generation of men and women who sacrificed much for the greater good. It is an honour to bring the play to Nova Scotia, as Maritimers gave so abundantly to the war effort. This play is dedicated to all Canadian Servicemen and Servicewomen, past and present.”

Scores of students from schools in the region will attend Jakes’ Gift, and will be given opportunity to bring their questions and share their thoughts with Mackey, who is both the writer and performer of this significant work. Direction and stage management are by Dirk Van Stralen, with lighting design by Gerald King. The September 2010 production of Jake’s Gift  is sponsored by RMA Tourism, based in Parrsboro.
