by Rena Kossatz, Ship's Company Theatre

PARRSBORO NS:  Two Ship’s Company Theatre performances are represented in the nominations for Robert Merritt Awards in recognition of excellence in Nova Scotian Theatre, announced in Halifax this week by Christopher Shore, Executive Director of Theatre Nova Scotia.

Mary Vingoe, noted director, actor, and co-founder of Ship’s Company Theatre in Parrsboro, is nominated for ‘Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role’ for her dynamic portrayal of Minnie in the play Ivor Johnson’s Neighbours, adapted for the stage by Charlie Rhindress from the novel by author Bruce Graham.

Nominated for ‘Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role’ is the late Bill Forbes, for his memorable portrayal of Duddy, also in Ivor Johnson’s Neighbours. Forbes, a respected theatre artist and beloved friend, passed away suddenly in July, 2009, near the close of the play’s run in Parrsboro.

During its 2009 season Ship’s Company Theatre celebrated its 25th year of presenting live theatre in Parrsboro, and continues to be a prime centre for the development and production of new Atlantic Canadian works. Watch for details of the theatre’s upcoming 2010 Season at www.shipscompany.com.
