| ARTISTIC DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE |
 |
| Pamela Halstead |
2008 is Ship’s Company Theatre’s 25th Season
of producing plays in Parrsboro. In those 25
seasons there have been numerous productions
that reflected the history of the region, and so it
seems fitting, on the 50th anniversary of the
Springhill Mine disaster, that we open the season
with a play that tells the story of the brave men who survived.
Ship’s Company Theatre has been committed over those 25 seasons
to producing not only new Canadian work, but specifically providing
a showcase for Atlantic Canadian playwrights. All three playwrights
featured in our 2008 season, Rick Merrill, Daniel Lillford, and Harry
Thurston, are writers who live and work in the Maritimes. Every
actor, designer, and crew member on the season, with one exception,
lives in, or is originally from, Atlantic Canada. All the stories on the
Mainstage this summer reflect life in the Maritimes, be it Springhill
in 1958, a diner in a fictional small town in New Brunswick, or the
journey of imagination back through time to connect with John
O’Brien, painter of tall ships across Nova Scotia.
Atlantic Canada is also full of many gifted musicians. The music on
our stage this summer reflects the diversity of the genres and styles.
We may be known for our fiddles and celtic music, and you will find
that represented here. You will also find musicians who have received
Juno nods playing jazz, blues, and folk music. This year our popular
Mainstage Special Event will feature the work of one of Nova Scotia’s
own musical legends, Wilf Carter.
Ship’s Company Theatre’s 25th Season is truly a celebration of the
stories and talents of Atlantic Canada. Enjoy!
